Action Against Hunger operates in nearly 50 countries worldwide to save the lives of malnourished children while providing communities with sustainable access to safe water and long-term solutions to hunger. Last year they helped over 14.9 million people.
The international humanitarian organisation has been working with the restaurant industry for 18 years and has incredibly generous supporters which makes Emma Cullingford’s job much easier. As the Head of Food Related Fundraising, Emma has spent seven years overseeing and coordinating campaigns such as Love Food Give Food as well as managing relationships with their supporters and helping organise fundraising events.
Here, Emma shares how the Love Food Give Food fundraising campaign unites chefs, restaurants and those who love food.
What is the campaign Love Food Give Food and how does it work?
Love Food Give Food is our flagship annual restaurant campaign that runs throughout September and October where hundreds of chefs and restaurants across the UK raise funds by adding a discretionary £1 donation to each table bill, or by making a small donation from a popular dish.
It takes £1 to provide a malnourished child with a day’s nutritional treatment. All those £1s really do add up to an incredible total, and makes a huge difference to those who need it most. It’s a great way for restaurants and customers alike to come together to raise funds and awareness for our lifesaving work around the world.
How can restaurateurs get involved?
Restaurants can easily get involved in Love Food Give Food by signing up on our website or by getting in touch with our team. The system is simple and costs the restaurant absolutely nothing to implement. We have been told how rewarding it is for the whole restaurant team to take part.
We also have events going on throughout the year including individual and team challenges which are always great fun to get involved with.
Why do you think people have responded the way they have to the campaign?
I think chefs and restaurateurs are passionate about supporting us because of the connection between the fantastic restaurant culture we enjoy here in the UK and the lifesaving work Action Against Hunger does around the world.
What feedback have you received from supporters?
‘This is a fantastic and meaningful opportunity for all of us within the food industry to be passionate and influential supporters. It’s also a great way to showcase our restaurants and how we are supporting charities,’ says Tong Chee Hwee, Executive Head Chef of Hakkasan.
‘It’s a simple process and one that has minimum impact on operations and diners experience. Let’s spread our love for food and those in desperate need,’ shares the El Gato Negro Tapas Manchester team.

Are you excited about something particular this year?
2016 is set to be our biggest year yet with over 350 restaurants already signed up and a great mix of both new and long-standing supporters. I’m excited about the potential of this year’s campaign to raise an incredible amount, and hopefully exceed last year’s amazing total of £330,000.
